Last updated: 24 August 2026. This describes how the live MyGeneRoots app actually works — it is not formal legal advice.
What this product is
MyGeneRoots is a photo-based ancestry estimate for entertainment and education. It is not a DNA test, medical device, or lab service.
Your photo
Your photo is processed in the browser (MediaPipe Face Mesh) to detect facial landmarks and sample a skin-tone swatch. The image file itself is not uploaded to our servers.
What we do send
To generate a report, the browser posts to our scoring API:
- Facial landmark coordinates and image dimensions (or fallback measurements if detection fails)
- The traits you select (eye color, hair type, and similar)
- A sampled skin-tone value
- If you are signed in, a Firebase ID token so we can check scan credits
We use that payload to score reference profiles and return a report. We do not use it as a spit-kit DNA result.
Accounts and credits
If you create an account, Firebase Auth stores your email (and Google profile if you use Google sign-in). Firestore stores scan-credit balances, family-tree credits, and optional scan history you save to your profile. Payments are handled by Stripe and/or Razorpay; we do not store full card numbers.
Staging
The staging site may unlock Pro-depth scans for testing. That is a server setting, not a change to how photos are handled.
